One of the most important contributions that a professional linguist can make is to write a comprehensive reference grammar of a language that has not previously been described in detail. This contributes both to the empirical record to which all linguistic theory must be accountable, and to the cultural and social life of the community of people who speak the language. This node provides a venue for exchange of knowledge and methods in relation to field work and analysis of languages as complete systems.
